Gee's Bend

We had a wonderful program at Empire Quilters on Saturday. Maggie shared some of her Gee's Bend collection and pointed out the unusual quilting designs in their "simple" quilts. This red & white was quilted with a rooftop motif instead of within the strips. Was that a practical choice or an aesthetic one?
The unusual color combination caught my eye on this one. I like interesting juxtapositions that raise questions....like why did this quilter add a white binding?
My own version of Gee's Bend inspired piecing is the scarf above. I added cotton scrap blocks to some silks for an elegant/rustic look.

    1. Not a shot cotton, but a fat quarter of woven hombre plaid that I spotted in JoAnn's and just had to have it.
